They raise him as their own child until the novelty of parenthood wears off, at which point they deposit him back on his old doorstep. That’s where, in one of the series’ funniest and weirdest bits (allegedly pitched by Abbi Jacobson, and a seeming wink at Ilana’s penchant for cultural appropriation on Broad City), Sharee and Jeff observe Joe Jackson emotionally abusing his young son Michael, and then proceed to kidnap the former King of Pop. In the antebellum South, Sharee and Jeff parachute in to save three African-Americans from a life of slavery, then maroon them in deeply racist 1960s Indiana. In 17th-century Massachusetts, Sharee is reminded that women had a pretty raw deal throughout history, but the cousins’ smoke-fueled disappearing act also helps convince the townspeople of Salem that witches are indeed a thing. The new Time Traveling Bong runs about 65 minutes (it’ll feel longer or shorter depending on how much weed you’ve smoked to prepare), and offers plenty of space and time to explore the outer reaches of that premise.
The original short, which was only about 90 seconds long, was based on a single joke: The past seems cool, but, eww, people in olden times actually smell really bad. And in a way, the new series, which airs tonight, tomorrow, and Friday, is itself an act of time travel: It’s based on a short that the three friends made for CollegeHumor back in 2012, a couple years before Comedy Central first aired Broad City and catapulted them to the center of the zeitgeist. Downs, better known on the latter show as Abbi Abrams’s Soulstice boss and recent paramour Trey Pucker. Time Traveling Bong is cocreated by Broad City director-writer Lucia Aniello and Paul W. When news broke of Time Traveling Bong, the new three-part Comedy Central miniseries from Ilana Glazer, Broad City fans the Internet over had the same thought: Who is Ilana without her partner in crime, Abbi? Can our favorite curly-haired stoner hack it alone?
